Overtown-Venetian 138 KV Line Project - Miami, Florida

A 138kv line was installed linking Miami and Miami Beach. Mears Group, contracted by Florida Power & Light (FPL), installed the 9-inch steel pipeline for three HDD crossings at 5,188-ft, 5,917-ft and 5,013-ft. Due to the formation, each crossing was installed as an intersect crossing. Two of the crossings were shore approaches and the final crossing was a water-to-water crossing.

A gyroscopic steering tool was utilized for this marine crossing. Because of the amount of magnet interference in the area, this steering tool was the most logical choice for this project. The gyroscope uses accurate sensors to establish measurements relative to true north so it is not affected by magnetic interference.

Special precautions were taken to protect manatees and sea grass. The crew maintained a watch for manatees throughout the entire project.
